Re-enable Hierarchy View

Objective

In this comprehensive guide, we will take you through the process of enabling the Hierarchy View again after Microsoft disabled this feature in their Wave 2 (2024) update by customizing Apps in the Power Platform. The Hierarchy View is used on both Employee and Department records to graphically show the relationship between records and parent records.

Note: This view has been deprecated by Microsoft. This tutorial shows you how to re-enable the Microsoft Hierarchy view for the time being. After October 2025, the Hierarchy view by Microsoft will no longer be usable. Hubdrive will continue to offer a Hierarchy view in our solution. To use the Hierarchy view provided by Hubdrive, you don't need to do anything.

Prerequisites

Access Permissions: Make sure you have the necessary permissions to modify fields within the app. (Minimum 'System Customizer'-Security Role or Admin)

Step 1: Open the Power Platform

Launch the Power Platform by visiting the page  make.powerapps.com
Login with your credentials (Admin or System Customizer)

Step 2: Navigate to the Environment

Choose the specific environment where you want to re-add the Hierarchy View. Click on the environment name in the top-right to switch environment as needed.

Step 3: Navigate to the correct Solution

Click on Solutions in the left side menu
Open your storage for customizations (see a guide on how to create one  here)

Step 4: Add Apps to your storage for customizations

Click on +Add existing in the Ribbon bar
Then click on App and then Model-driven App
Click the checkbox next to the App(s) you want to customize the Hierarchy View for (e.g. HR Hub or HR Hub Employee Self-Services)
Then click on Add below

Step 5: Open App and Enable Hierarchy view

Go to the App (e.g. HR HUB) inside the Power Platform and open it
In the Ribbon bar, click on Settings and then on Features
Set (Retired) Enable the "View hierarchy" capability to Yes
Save

Step 6: Publish your changes

Press Publish on the right side of the Ribbon bar

Hint

Be aware you need to apply those changes separately to every App where you would like to use them. That means if you would like to use the Hierarchy View in multiple Apps, e.g. in HR HUB and in HR HUB Manager Self-Services, you'll have to repeat steps 5 and 6 for every App respectively.
